Crosshatching, originally uploaded by G_X_M.

Go to the Chicago Public Radio homepage here to check it out. . . took this shot back in 2007 actually, found a bunch of old shots on my other computer. I couldn't tell where or what this was initially, but it's a shot of 2 people walking their little dog in the Walgreens parking lot at Albany/Armitage.

I can't believe how well the fence detail turned out, it really looks like a perfect cross-hatching of the image...with a bungee-cord in the middle. :-)

Mayfair block party, originally uploaded by gabriel_x_michael.

Check out the Chicago Public Radio page here, and the Chicagoist page here. . .

Very proud to have this shot selected on both sites -- this is from a block party around Foster/Tripp that I passed on my bike. They were holding it in the alley, with everyone's garage doors open; it was a really cool sight and I knew it was one of the last "images of summer" I would get. Of course, the staggered layers of pennant streamers look really cool.

The little girl on the right, in a green shirt, while I was taking shots, she strolled up to me on her scooter, just staring at me while I worked. I think she either really really wanted me to get a shot of her, or she was wishing this stranger would leave the party :-)

Check out the Chicagoist page here. . . took this shot at a middle school at Kostner/Argyle. The B&W brings out all the subtle patterns and lines. I like the sense of order, repetition, and symmetry from the 4 basketball hoops on the brick wall.

Check out the Chicagoist page here. . . I was on another bike ride, down Wrightwood Avenue through Logan Square, and headed down the alley paralleling Wrightwood, and saw this scene. The homemade orange basketball hoop really stood out against the old plywood and earthtones , all against the blue sky.

Ceiling fan, 1230 N. Larrabee - featured on Chicagoist "Extra, Extra" 9/30/2010

Ceiling fan, originally uploaded by gabriel_x_michael.

Check out the Chicagoist page here. . . another series of shots I did at 1230 N. Larrabee. I really wanted to get a great shot of this room with the ceiling fan still remaining. It just seems a little off, or odd to me. I like the juxtaposition of human furnishings like a ceiling fan against the grit of the demolished concrete, steel rebar on the left.

Check out the Chicagoist page here. . . took this shot at yesterday at Fullerton/Kedzie. Not sure if the balloons were for a party or what, they were hanging on a line stretched north to south across Fullerton Avenue.

It was just a boring overcast, chilly day -- a taste of what we have in store for us until next spring.

Check out the Chicagoist page here. . . detail shot of an infamous "photo op" building sitting at apprx. Noble and North Ave, just NW of Goose Island.

The yellow-orange-blue bands covering the entire length of the building are beautiful and aged. This is a segment of the wall that's missing -- I like that you can see the detail and texture of the exposed brick.

Check out the Chicagoist page here. . . one photo from a series of shots I took last Saturday afternoon at 1230 N. Larrabee (Larrabee and Division). This CHA high-rise was constructed in 1962 and stands 15 stories tall. A twin building sits further west on Division at 1230 N. Burling and is slated for demolition within weeks.

I have become pretty fascinated with shooting around the Cabrini-Green and Goose Island areas of the Near North Side lately.

Check out the Chicagoist page here. . . this is a scene from the August Critical Mass ride in downtown Chicago. Very beautiful weather, very large crowd this time, and there was some definite congestion heading out of the downtown area.

We started out from Dearborn/Washington, riding south through Financial District and into Greektown. The ride was very cool as always, but kinda blah, uninteresting this time. When I thought the route was turning south to Pilsen, I got excited, but then we headed north up to Ukie Village/Bucktown.

Bike ride through Northwest woods

, originally uploaded by gabriel_xavier_michael.

I biked up Kostner to Foster, taking Pulaski up to Bryn Mawr, and headed west. The Valley Line Trail is at Kostner, but going further west there is a clearing and trail along the river branch just south of Bryn Mawr. . .

I headed east on the trail, until I wasn't sure where I was located anymore, and this beautiful deer was alongside the trail, 4 feet away and staring at me. I had no idea how it would react so I grabbed a shot and left the scene.

Check out the Chicagoist page here. This shot is from yesterday evening... I was on a bike ride around 8 PM in Logan Square. I was headed south and saw the reflection of the sky behind me in some windows... I had to stop there and catch some pictures before the sky turned. The colors were absolutely gorgeous, so warm and fantastic. The puddle creates a perfect, almost surreal reflection...

Tracks at Kinzie

, originally uploaded by gabriel_xavier_michael.

Another nighttime bike ride, going my usual path down Milwaukee to Racine and through Fulton Market....

I stopped at the train tracks crossing Racine and grabbed this shot. I was so nervous of getting caught that I must have moved mid-exposure, and the image turned out with these bendy trails of light... Pretty cool, I must say.

Abandoned farmhouse

On a bike ride outside of St. Charles, MO, I went wandering around and found this house off a private driveway. The entire house and surrounding property (pool, poolhouse, tennis courts, farm, stables, sheds, garage, etc!) are totally ruined and dilapidated, we found items referencing 2007 but it's obvious that no one has lived here since long before then.

New stencil spotted south of IIT, at 37th and State. The bike ride here and back was a killer but worth it.

1460 W. Arbour Pl. (A)

Found this cool stencil in the brick-paved alley behind Arbour Place, off Ashland. I think this alley was once a full street... anyways, there were copies of this stencil put up all down the alley, I think it was being tested out.

Red tulips

Red tulips, originally uploaded by gabriel_xavier_michael.

Second photo for today, this one is couple months old--4/9. The early days of spring, more sunlight it seems, the ending conclusion of sleet/snow/freezing temps, and mild temperatures appearing every now and then. These tulips popped up in the backyard. I think Apr/May is my favorite time of the year. Warm weather is just beginning and the summer ahead gives you optimistic feelings.

1303 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Another round of Polaroids, this time around Milwaukee Ave in Wicker Park. This is a shot at The Ark Thrift Store near Paulina. A random headless, armless mannequin posed on its knees (??) with legs crossed. Racks of women's clothing set up behind it.

07 July 2010

2747 W. Superior St. (B)

Riding around South Humboldt Park/Ukie Village area this particular afternoon, this electric, graphic-looking Nite Moves tag caught my eye. I went down the alley behind Superior to snap this shot.

02 July 2010

3943 W. Diversey Ave.

I was outside of the Walgreens at Pulaski and Diversey. I forgot my memory card at home, headed downtown to Critical Mass, so I bought a new one here and was trying to rip apart the military-grade plastic packaging on said memory card.

I got the card out and "tested" it out: across the street, these people were kinda just stationary, stumbling around in place. I think the woman caught glimpse of my camera and averted her gaze downward like you see here. She has a pretty frozen demeanor going on.

The guy in the middle looks pretty goofy here -- shortly after this, he proceeded to pick a fight with the guy in red, and shoved him into a parked car. It got pretty heated, and you could tell the guy in blue was supremely wasted.

832 W. Haines St. (Color)

Shot of a factory building at Haines (old Ogden Ave)/Hooker St. on Goose Island. A bit of post-processing applied for dramatic effect. I could explore Goose Island for days, weeks... I think it's an integral part of Chicago.

119 N. Peoria St. (A)

Checking out the Banksy on Peoria again, I saw this wall further down south of Randolph. Love the geometry and monochromatic vs. pastel thing goin' on.

1838 W. Lawrence Ave.

Taken on the way home from Montrose Harbor at Wolcott and Lawrence. Woman waiting on the CTA bus with convenience store in the background.
